Color
Incorporate your favorite color using flowers, pots, and cushions.
For a calming retreat use cool colors like whites, blues, mauve, and light pinks and yellows.
Or, for an energizing space try reds, oranges, and bright yellows and purples.
Scroll Pinterest for color combo inspiration and note the ones you like best.
Texture
Mixing textures makes your retreat visually interesting.
Aim for a combination of sturdy structured plants and feathery or willoughy ones.
Same goes for flowers – think large singles bloom flowers versus sprays of tiny buds.
Also mix blooms in pots, like a sturdy geranium paired with trailing lobelia.
Scents
What kinds of scents do you want in your retreat – spicy, perfumy, citrus, mint?
Choose plants with scents you love.
Avoid any you dislike or make you sneeze.
Add scent with candles, incense, or essential oils.
Consider lavender – it’s relaxing and lovely!
Sound
Layer sound into your retreat with a water feature like a table fountain.
Or, wind chimes made of bamboo or tinkling metal.
Tall grasses and certain trees have a beautiful sound in the breeze.
If all you hear is traffic noise, use earbuds and an app with relaxing sounds.
Comfort
Make your garden retreat comfortable!
Think comfy seating or a meditation cushion.
Add a little table for your book or cup of tea.
Add a swing or hammock – my favorite outdoor spot is on my patio swing – for yourself, or as a place to snuggle up with little ones.
I hope these 5 easy tips give you some ideas so you can enjoy your own garden retreat!
